How do i get started with Blender node-based materials if i’m used to painting?
#1
I’m trying to decide if I should finally learn Blender for my 3D modeling, but I’m worried the node-based workflow for materials and textures will completely stall my progress. I’m used to more direct painting and layer-based tools, so that whole system feels like a different language.

I tried Blender and the node system felt clunky at first but you can still get decent textures with simple nodes. It makes you plan what inputs you really need instead of painting everything by hand. I kept it to a couple of easy textures and it started to click after a while.

The switch from direct painting to a node based setup is like switching languages mid project. On the first days I kept thinking in layers and then I tried to mix two textures with a simple blend and it finally made sense, though it slowed me down.

I did a small experiment where I painted a color map in the usual program and then plugged it into the base shader and added a roughness map with a couple of nodes. It worked, but I watched the render time creep and I felt I was chasing perfect control rather than finishing the model.

Maybe the real issue is the pace you need or the fear of wasting time on a new workflow rather than the tool itself Is that the real blocker?
