How do i get synth pads to sit back in the mix without losing presence?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I used a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the background. Is there something specific I should be doing with mid-range frequencies or the reverb’s pre-delay to create that sense of depth?

I tried carving a small dip around 300–500 Hz on the pads and dialing back some 2–4 kHz so they stop fighting the other synths in that same range. It lightened the mud and made the pads sit a touch more in the background without killing their warmth.

I leaned into the effect send and used a shorter, darker tail plus a touch of pre delay so the pad lands after the dry hits. A small room or plate with about 40–60 ms pre delay kept the space feeling natural and helped it sit behind the vocal and bass.

Do you think the problem is actually space in the mix, or could the other parts be too loud and filling the space?

I wandered off to try a gentle chorus on pads to widen them, but that made them front and center rather than back. After stepping back, it seemed like depth might hinge on how the pad’s upper harmonics interact with the bass and kick, though I’m not sure I’m hearing it right.
