How do I know when racing slicks warm up enough for a Miata track session?

I just got my first set of proper racing slicks for my track Miata, and I’m honestly a bit intimidated by the warm-up procedure. Everyone talks about getting them into the right temperature window, but on my last outing, I felt like I never got them truly switched on before my session was over. How do you know when they’re ready without over-driving on cold tires?

I got my first proper racing slicks a season ago and spent a few sessions chasing a warm up that never really clicked. On cold tires I found the grip vague and the balance off, like it wanted to slide before it gripped. After a couple of laps the center woke up and the car suddenly felt more connected, but the edges still needed work. I learned not to push for peak grip on that first lap.

I learned to listen to the car instead of chasing a perfect window. The moment it starts to settle and the tire marks bite a bit harder, I step in and respect that pace rather than yank on it.

There was a day I overthought the issue and swapped pressures and camber, then realized the surface and conditions changed faster than I expected. The tires were fine; I just hadn't found the moment when they truly came alive.

Do you think the real problem is not letting them breathe, or could it be track temp or pressure? I ask because I still chase it in my head after sessions.
