How do I lock a layer in Procreate without smearing lineart?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to lock a layer in Procreate so I don’t accidentally smear the lineart when I’m painting underneath it, but every time I try to use the reference tool for that, it seems to mess with my canvas size or color picking. Has anyone else had this issue where locking layers just doesn’t behave the way you expect?

Yeah, I’ve run into that. Locking the layer to stop the line art from getting touched by the paint underneath never felt reliable. Sometimes the brush still bleeds right up to the edge. I started painting underneath on a separate layer and using a clipping mask so nothing sneaks onto the line art, and that helped more than the lock did.

Procreate has this weird feel to it where the lock on a layer isn’t a hard wall. It’s like the stroke data still wants to sample through or something. I’ve given up trying to rely on it entirely.

Did you try turning off reference mode entirely while painting? It might just be the reference tool grabbing color or affecting the canvas size.

I paused, reset the brush library, then came back and it felt calmer for a bit. Maybe a bug or memory hiccup, I guess.
