How do i measure monthly progress on a long-term plan?
#1
I’ve been trying to break down my big five-year vision into manageable monthly steps, but I keep getting stuck on how to actually measure progress month-to-month. It feels like I’m either tracking too many tiny details or missing the point entirely, and I’m not sure what a realistic monthly milestone even looks like.

I tried splitting the year by one clear deliverable each month and tracking a simple yes or no plus a quick blocker note. It took a couple cycles to trust that one metric per month really mattered. After two rounds I could see a pattern of what was actually moving forward rather than chasing tiny tasks.

I wonder if the problem isn’t the metrics but the vision itself. When the long view stays fuzzy, you end up measuring endlessly. I tried sharpening the big goal first, then things clicked a bit.

I kept a monthly deliverable and treated it as non negotiable. If I missed it, I either dropped something else or rewrote it for the next month. It was rough at first but easier once I stopped overthinking.

I started chasing engagement metrics like hours worked and interviews, but they didn’t align with real progress. So I started asking: am I moving toward the next big goal? And what if the real problem isn’t measuring but choosing the right goal?
