How do I pick a Linux backup tool with versioning for a home server?
#1
I’ve been trying to find a good local backup solution for my home server that can handle versioning and runs on Linux. I’ve been testing a few, but I’m not sure if my setup is right because the initial backup seems to take forever even over a direct gigabit connection.

I have used restic on a linux home server and it does versioning but the first backup was slow even on gigabit the data set felt small but the tool scanned everything

I did a real world trial and split the backup into a full then incremental passes and the first pass took forever but the next ones got quicker as the file changes were smaller

Could the issue be the number of tiny files or the destination drive slow write speed?

I tried a dry run with a tiny subset and watched CPU and disk wait times and it matched the slow pace for the full set but the delta was okay later
