How do I pick between a clean line or multiple strokes in digital drawing?
#1
I’ve been trying to get more confident with my linework by sketching directly in my digital painting software, but I keep getting stuck on whether to commit to a clean, single line or build it up with multiple overlapping strokes. My sketches end up looking messy and hesitant instead of fluid, and I can’t seem to find a comfortable middle ground for my illustration style.

I messed around with two passes. First I let a loose fast gesture carry the silhouette, then I came back with a sharper brush to lock the main edges. The trick was not erasing the first stroke too aggressively—it's a record of the motion, not a mistake to scrub away. After a couple of sessions, the line felt more confident, even when I slowed down.

I still get messy lines sometimes. I think the problem isn't the line itself but my workflow. If I work too quickly, the strokes fight each other. Slowing down and watching the line anchor helps a bit, but it never stays perfectly fluid.

Do you think the real issue is the pressure curve on your tablet?

One time I drifted into testing a textured brush and even forgot the goal, it felt more like doodling than drawing. Then I circled back to a simple pencil feel and it still wasn't solved. Maybe I'm chasing precision too early.
