How do pro players time map control pushes without overextending?
#1
I’ve been trying to improve my map control in pro matches by watching a lot of VODs, but I keep getting caught out during rotations. How do the top IGLs seem to know exactly when to push for map control without overextending?

I’ve watched a ton of VODs and tried to copy the timing, but rotations still bite. I once thought we had a clean window to push for map control and we overextended; the other team traded and we lost two, then had to reset.

I learned to watch the minimap and listen for when the entry team is engaging vs stalling. When the IGL called a rotation, we’d check if there was a support player ready. If there wasn’t, we peeled off after one step and kept a safe exit. We kept a rough 1–2 second margin before committing to a site we couldn’t hard cap for map control.

Do you think the problem is the calls, or are you just misreading where the enemy actually is? Maybe the bigger issue is the information flow behind those decisions?

I tried taking it slower in practice, see if we could trade space instead of chasing every window. It was messy and not very exciting, and I still wonder if we should have tried something different.
