How do you build a travel capsule wardrobe that fits in a carry-on?

I’ve been trying to pack for a two-week trip with just a carry-on, but I keep failing. I always end up needing to check a bag because I can’t fit everything, especially with different climates and a few nice dinners planned. How do you actually make a capsule wardrobe for travel work without feeling like you’re wearing the same thing in every photo?

I tried a capsule wardrobe once and it finally clicked when I treated outfits as mixable layers rather than a fixed set for every day.

One trip I planned two weeks with a carry on and ended up washing things in the hotel sink because a shirt got stained.

I did a home test for a week with seven outfits and found that half of them looked the same in photos even though the settings were different.

Maybe the real snag is laundry and storage on the road not the clothes themselves I kept it simple and still felt off about photos.
