How do you find hidden gem shows beyond the algorithm?
#1
I’m trying to get better at finding hidden gems on the major services, but my watchlist is just filling up with the same algorithm-driven suggestions everyone else sees. How do you all break out of that cycle and actually discover the less-hyped shows or movies you end up loving?

Got into a habit of muting the big recs and building a tiny, personal feed from festival lineups, indie labels, and niche Letterboxd lists. I pick 2 or 3 items each week, open them even if the thumbnail looks bland, and jot quick notes on vibe and mood. A few wins popped up because they weren’t in the algorithm’s lane, like a quiet wintry drama or a funny little documentary that felt earned. Keeps the list fresh, even if it means stalling on the big premieres.

I started chasing choices from less obvious corners of the catalogs—regional streaming hubs, festival catalogs, and the odd article about an overlooked release. The trick isn’t in the quality signals but in the gaps: where the show isn’t screaming for attention but people you respect loved it. I ended up with a couple on Prime that never would have shown up in my feed, and a small anthology that clicked.

I sometimes feel like I’m chasing time rather than gems. I have two hours a week and end up rewatching comfort stuff. So I just set a tiny ritual: 15 minutes to sample one underrated title, no expectations. Most weeks nothing sticks, but once in a while I stumble on something I’d have missed.

Maybe the real problem isn’t discovery at all but the watchlist monster growing faster than I can actually watch. I tried pruning to a five item active list and it helped my head, but it felt like admitting I won’t ever finish. Do you think the problem is the platform or our own taste?
