How do you keep your router firmware up to date without it becoming a chore?
#1
I just found out my home router has been running the same firmware it shipped with three years ago. I’m realizing I have no real process for checking this stuff regularly, and it feels like a pretty basic oversight. How do you all keep track of your own device patch cycles without it becoming a second job?

I try to keep it simple: quarterly checks. I log into the router's status page every three months, note the current firmware version, and compare against the vendor's site. If there is a newer release, I download it and schedule a short maintenance window to apply the update and reboot. It felt slow at first, but now it becomes a routine rather than a crisis.

Do you actually need constant patching or is a policy of quarterly checks enough?

I turned on auto update where possible, but I still back up the config first and keep a manual follow up in case something breaks.

I keep a tiny log in a notebook, nothing fancy, just model, version, date checked, and a note if I disabled auto update after a hiccup. It helped me not feel blindsided when the vendor drops a big changelog.
