How do you know if your family budget is tightening from grocery bills?

I’m trying to figure out if my family’s budget is just unusually tight or if others are seeing this too. Our grocery bill has gone up so much that we’ve had to cut back on driving just to afford basics, and I don’t see how this is sustainable.

I hear you. Our budget got tighter too, and grocery prices shot up enough to feel it month to month. I started keeping a simple log: what we buy and the total each week. This month we’re spending noticeably more than six months ago, even with the same meals.

We were there a few weeks back—same meals, same kids, but the cart kept getting heavier. We switched to store brands, checked unit prices, and tried to buy in smaller increments to avoid waste. It helped a little, but it still hurts our bottom line.

I’ve talked to a few neighbors, and sure enough, groceries are up for them too. I even wandered into a farmers market thinking fresh produce would be cheaper, and came out with spinach and basil but no big relief. It’s easy to drift off topic, but the math still stings.

Do you think the spike is mainly groceries, or could other costs be gnawing at things too?
