How do you manage bile acid malabsorption beyond meds?
#1
I’ve been dealing with what my doctor calls bile acid malabsorption for a few months now, and the constant, urgent diarrhea is really starting to disrupt my daily life. I’m on a binder, but I still have these unpredictable episodes, especially after I eat any kind of fatty meal. Has anyone else found that managing this condition involves more than just medication?

Yeah, same here. The doctor talks about bile acid malabsorption, but I found it mostly a life thing, not just a pill. I started keeping a simple log of what I eat and when the urge hits. Fatty meals almost always come with trouble, so I trimmed fat and ate a bit smaller portions. Hydration mattered too, and I switched to easier to digest snacks after bigger meals. I’m not cured, but the days felt more manageable.

I started carrying a small bag with a few low-fat foods and a bottle so I could stay calm during a sudden episode. I tried timing meals to avoid big fatty meals right before important days—eat earlier and then sit down after, instead of rushing around. I kept a rough diary of days when it calmed down and days it didn’t, and that helped me talk to the doctor about how to handle meals and meds.

Is this really the BAM, or could stress or a random gut thing be driving some of the days?

I tried cutting out almost all fats and it helped a bit, but people around me said it was hard to live like that long term. I didn’t see a clean pattern, days when I followed the plan still felt random. I’m not sure if I’m chasing the right thing, or if the meds are the real anchor.
