How much difference will a lighter, wider wheelset make on mixed gravel?

I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade my gravel bike’s stock wheelset to something lighter and wider, but I’m not sure the performance gain is worth the cost for the mixed-surface riding I do. My local routes are about half rough pavement and half hardpacked dirt trails, and I’m wondering if anyone has made a similar change and actually felt a noticeable difference in ride quality or speed.

I swapped to wider, lighter gravel wheels last season. The ride felt smoother on rough pavement and I could keep a steadier tempo on the dirt too. The big lift was confidence; the bike tracked better at low pressures and I noticed less fatigue in the hands. It wasn’t a fireworks moment in speed, but the rhythm felt easier.

I did the upgrade and saved a bit of weight, but the speed gains were not dramatic for my mixed routes. Tire choice and pressure mattered more than the wheel weight. If you’re careful with tubeless tires and sealing, you might feel a nicer ride, but I’d only drop cash if you’re riding the same loop regularly and can quantify it a bit.

Have you measured anything yet, like time on your usual loop or rolling resistance, or are you just chasing the idea of faster speeds?

A friend kept stock and just widened the tires. He felt more grip and comfort but no clear speed gain. Maybe the real limiter is tires or rider fitness, not the wheelset.
