How much should i trust Carfax when buying a used compact suv?

I’ve been looking at used compact SUVs and keep seeing ads mentioning a clean Carfax report, but I’m not sure how much weight to actually give that. My neighbor bought a car with one and still ended up with hidden rust issues the report didn’t catch.

I bought a compact SUV with a supposedly clean Carfax, and the deal looked solid. A year in I found rust along the rocker panels that the report didn’t flag. It wasn’t dramatic, but the underbody showed thin spots where moisture sat in winter. I learned to treat the report as one data point, not gospel, and to poke around in person, feel for soft spots, look for bubbling paint, and listen for odd creaks on a slow drive.

I’m not sure the report is the whole picture. Maybe rust hides behind trim or undercoating, or it started after the car crossed the state line. The problem felt bigger because I kept chasing fixes I didn’t trust, and I started doubting what a single history entry can really tell you.

I had a different experience: a clean history and no obvious rust, but after six months the tailgate area started to peel and pin holes showed up by the wheels. It made me wonder if I should have listened to a pre purchase inspection more than a report.

Do you have a local trusted mechanic you can pay for a pre purchase inspection?
