How often should I check router logs for failed login attempts?

I check my router logs every few days and usually just skim the recent entries. Most of the time it feels like background noise, but every now and then I notice a cluster of failed login attempts from IPs I don’t recognize, and that’s when I pause and wonder if I should be paying closer attention.

I was reviewing my router's logs and saw a bunch of failed login attempts from unfamiliar IPs. It's got me wondering how often I should actually be checking these logs, or if I'm just being paranoid.

I check my router every couple of days for about ten minutes and skim the recent entries in the logs. Most of the time it feels like noise, but every now and then I see a string of attempts from new IPs that makes me sit up.

I stopped assuming a weekly glance is enough and started paying attention after I noticed a burst of failures over a couple of hours. I blocked the obvious offenders and kept an eye on any repeating patterns. It calmed down after that.

Maybe the bigger issue is not the random login tries but the password and exposure of the admin page. I switched to a longer password and limited admin access to the LAN side and that cut down the alerts.

I once chased a single warning for an hour thinking it was a hacker and then found a misconfigured printer was pinging the router. It was frustrating and taught me not every spike is a break in.

I keep thinking I should set up alerts or automate checks but the notifications pile up and I end up ignoring them. Maybe the noise is worse than the danger.

Do you think this is the real problem or could there be something masking it like a misconfigured device on your network?
