How reliable is my electric vehicle range for long trips, or should I add a buffer?

I’m trying to figure out if my EV’s range estimate is actually reliable for planning longer trips, or if I should just ignore it and add a big buffer. The guess-o-meter seems to change so drastically based on whether I’m using climate control or driving on the highway that it makes me nervous.

I treat the range readout as a rough guide. On hot days with the A/C on or when I’m climbing hills, I add a buffer and don’t trust the displayed number completely.

I’ve watched it swing a lot between highway and city driving. On the highway it seems to drop more slowly, but in town with stops it’s like the meter has mood swings.

I tried a couple of trips where I logged what the car actually consumed vs what the display showed. It wasn’t perfect, but it helped me plan to stop sooner if the predicted energy use spiked.

One thing that bugs me: sometimes I wonder if the problem is the estimate or whether the real world is just noisy. Do we really know what we’re planning for, or are we chasing a moving target?
