How should I cite a dataset from a public repository in my dissertation?

I'm struggling with how to properly cite a dataset from a public repository in my dissertation's methodology section. The repository provides a suggested citation format, but it includes elements like a persistent identifier and version number that feel clunky in the middle of a sentence. I'm not sure if I should use the full suggested citation inline or find a way to weave the key elements into my prose and then list the full reference in the bibliography.

I’ve done this a few times. I usually keep the inline note light and put the full thing in the bibliography. So I write something like DatasetName (doi:10.1234/abcd, v2) in the sentence, and then include the full citation with authors, year, title, repository, and DOI in the references.

I tried weaving the DOI and version into the sentence, but it muffled the flow. I ended up with a minimalist inline cue like DatasetName (doi:10.1234/abcd, v2), and I kept the rest for the bibliography. It felt clunkier when you want a clean narrative.

Is this really about sentence flow, or about ensuring future readers can locate the data? I’m leaning toward flow, but I’m not sure.

Sometimes I drift into license notes or provenance tangents, but in practice I just follow the repository's suggested citation in the bibliography and keep the inline cue minimal.
