How should I handle persistent grey-area moderation by regulars?
#1
I’ve noticed a few regulars in our community who consistently post content that’s just barely within the rules, but it always seems to push the line and create a tense atmosphere. I’m struggling with whether to address this pattern now or wait for a clearer violation. How do you handle this kind of persistent grey area behavior without seeming overly punitive?

I have seen this and it wears on you. The posts slide just inside the rules and the vibe in the threads shifts. I tend to start with small signals like a kind private note or a gentle reminder in a non public way. If the pattern keeps showing up I keep a simple log of what happened and when the tension spikes. It feels better to address it a bit before a full move into a real violation.

One time I tried a quiet warning in a chat thread and the regular kept going the same way. After that I watched what happened in the next few days and saw the same pattern rise again. We did not ban or remove them yet, just kept the tone calm and offered clearer examples of what counts as a grey area. It felt safer but slower and we did not get a clear answer from the user about what they expected.

I wonder if the real issue is our own norms more than the posts. Maybe the tension in the room makes people push the line because they sense no one will push back. What if we tried a casual community discussion to lay out what counts and what the group wants, but only if the mood in the room feels right?

I am torn and a bit rushed in thinking about this. I feel like maybe the problem is not the grey area itself but the way we react to it in the moment. I tried to slow down and let a thread breathe instead of jumping to a response and the thread moved on a bit. Then I felt the tension fade but not everywhere. I am not sure this is the fix.
