How should i pivot my illustration portfolio for editorial clients?

I’ve been a freelance illustrator for about three years, but I’m starting to feel like my portfolio is holding me back from landing the kind of editorial clients I really want. It’s a bit all over the place—some personal fantasy work, a few old logo projects, and only a couple of editorial-style pieces. How do you decide what to cut and what to showcase when you’re trying to pivot your book toward a specific niche?

I tried a pivot last year. I picked a core set of editorial pieces that felt like the voice I wanted, culled everything that didn’t fit that thread, and rebuilt my site around that story. I dropped two old logo projects and shifted the captions to talk about process and impact instead of just showing art. Within a couple of months I got a couple of editor inquiries and a few briefs that lined up with that vibe.

I still worry I cut too much and now it looks thin. Some days I wonder if the issue is the work, or how I present it in emails and on the page.

One time I kept a personal fantasy piece because it sparked a memory of how I think, but I learned to frame it in a way that slots into the editorial narrative rather than standing alone.
