How should I price a large branding project with multiple deliverables?

I’ve been freelancing as a graphic designer for a few years, but I’m struggling to figure out what to charge for a large branding project with multiple deliverables. My usual day rate feels too low for the scope, but I worry a flat project fee might lock me into endless revisions without extra pay. How do you all structure your pricing for something this complex?

I have handled big brand packages by splitting into a base SOW and a change request bucket. I estimate the core scope, set a flat base fee, and bill hourly for anything beyond the agreed revisions. I usually cap revisions at two rounds. If they want more we renegotiate or bill hourly.

Value based pricing can work when the client cares about market impact. I ask what the change is supposed to do for them, translate that into potential revenue lift or savings, and price accordingly with a multiplier on my time.

Milestones with clear deliverables such as a logo system, color system, typography, brand guidelines, and web assets. Each milestone has a price and progress moves forward after payment. Avoid open ended revisions.

Upfront retainer and hourly for extra changes. I take twenty to thirty percent upfront, then bill hourly after the initial rounds. I keep a simple scope log and call out anything that changes the scope.

Scope creep is real. Put a signed SOW in place with hard caps on changes. Anything beyond gets a new quote. It hurts when you discover you are deep into revisions and you have not adjusted the price.

I once priced by day rate and assumed two to three weeks. It ended up taking longer. Now I test pricing with ranges and set expectations. I prefer a base plus an optional add on list.

Question to others have you found a limit on revisions that still keeps you sane or do you always want to be flexible?
