How should I rank Arrival vs Dune vs Ex Machina in a top sci-fi list?
#1
I’m trying to put together my personal top ten sci-fi movies of the 2010s, and I’m completely stuck on where to place “Arrival.” It’s a masterpiece in my book, but ranking it against pure spectacle like “Dune” or the tight thriller logic of “Ex Machina” feels like comparing different species. How do you even weigh emotional impact against world-building or visual innovation?

Honestly Arrival hits me in the gut in a way pure spectacle films rarely do. I keep it high because the emotional pull sits with me longer than the flashy scenes. I try not to let rank creep into obsession but it stays near the top for the mood it creates and the quiet questions it leaves behind.

One thing I did for my own list was make two quick piles, the mind bending pile and the wow factor pile, then I tried to measure how much I re watched and which ones I remembered. It helped a little but then I realized the numbers lie when the feelings are real.

Maybe the real problem is not the ranking but whether a top ten is the right frame at all?

I remember a screening where the room held its breath during a single shot and the rest of the list faded for a minute, then I got back to thinking about how to weigh feelings against craft in a top ten.
