How to pack light for a 2-week trip: city, hiking, dinners in one carry-on?

I’m trying to pack for a two-week trip that involves a city break, some countryside hiking, and a few nice dinners, but I can’t seem to fit everything into one carry-on suitcase. I really want to avoid checked baggage fees and the wait at the carousel, but I’m starting to think it might be impossible without leaving something important behind. How do you all manage to pack so light for a trip with such mixed activities?

I did something similar last spring and somehow pulled it off with a single carry-on. I built a capsule wardrobe around a neutral color family so everything mixed. Three tops, two bottoms, one lightweight dress for dinners, a thin cardigan, and a compressible rain shell. Shoes were a light hiking boot and a pair of versatile flats. I rolled everything, used two small packing cubes, and tucked socks and underwear into a pouch that compressed a bit. I did sink washes every few days and air dried overnight. It was tight but no checked bag.

I thought I was smarter and quit after the third trip with a carry-on, but I still felt I needed a few more options for dinners. I ended up wearing the same outfit twice in a row and calling it “smart casual.” Not ideal, but it freed up space. I kept one extra tee and swapped in a scarf to change the look, which helped a little.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the clothes but the trip length and the schedule. If you have a two week itinerary with gallery openings and country pubs, you may be chasing the wrong constraint. I’m not sure that a single carry-on can cover both a heavy hiking day and a fancy dinner without some compromise.

One small trick I keep thinking about is a shapeless but cozy outer layer that can double as something else, like a light towel or cover, plus a travel towel and a packable rain jacket. I kept toiletries minis and used hotel supplies where possible. It’s marginal, and I’m not totally sure it makes a big difference, but it helps ease the guilt when you stuff the bag full.
