How will sustainable fuels and energy recovery change F1 racing?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my head around the new-for-2025 Formula 1 power unit regulations, specifically the move to fully sustainable fuels. I keep reading that the energy recovery systems will be way more important, but I’m not sure how that actually changes the racing we’ll see on track.

I watched some testing clips and the teams kept saying the car will still feel like an F1, but a lot more control from the electric side. The sustainable fuel is more of a badge; the on track drama will hinge on how aggressively ERS can be deployed and how efficiently it’s recovered.

During a practice session I heard a driver tell the engineers to save the ERS for the next corner and it felt like lap times could hinge on that energy split rather than outright horsepower.

I’m guessing the big change is not the fuel itself but the energy management window. If you burn more energy in a corner, you might gain a few tenths, but the car’s overall efficiency matters more, which means teams could chase multiple tiny gains rather than one big push.

Not convinced the problem is fuel; heat and reliability could dominate. If the engine runs hotter trying to optimize the sustainable fuel, the ERS might be forced to do more work, which changes tire life and pace.

Does that mean the races will be decided more in the pits with ERS strategy?

I drifted into a tangent about how the sound changes with the new fuel, then came back to thinking it’s still about when you deploy energy and how you manage brake thermal load sector by sector.

A buddy at a test said one car did a long stint with low fuel and heavier ERS use, and the lap times held within a couple tenths, but the driver looked more static at the end of the lap. Not sure how representative that is.
