Should a KVM switch support 1440p for sharing a monitor across two PCs?

I’m trying to set up a home office with a single monitor for both my work laptop and personal desktop, but switching cables is a real pain. I’ve been looking at a KVM switch to handle the sharing of my peripherals, but I’m not sure if a basic model will support the 1440p resolution and refresh rate I need from my main display.

I tried a budget KVM for my desk and it honestly struggled with 1440p. It would flip between devices and the monitor would blink or drop to 1080p, even though the box claimed 1440p60. In practice I left the KVM at 1080p and used the main machine’s output for the higher res.

Switching cables always felt fiddly. I had to reseat a displayport cable and sometimes the keyboard vanished for a beat, then came back once the switch settled.

Do you really need 1440p at 144 Hz, or would 1440p60 be enough and save you the pain?

I started thinking about a USB C dock and a second HDMI input, then drifted into rearranging the desk, but the core problem kept tugging me back to the switch.
