I'm trying to finalize my personal ranking of the best sci-fi movies of the 2010s, but I keep getting stuck on where to place "Arrival." Its impact is so unique compared to more action-driven films in the genre. I can't decide if its thoughtful, language-based approach deserves a spot higher than some of the decade's major blockbuster franchises.

I kept Arrival in the middle of my list and I think that feels right. It is a quiet film that still haunts you with ideas, and I felt the emotional weight without explosions, and that kind of restraint matters to me.

I did a quick second watching and tried to compare it to the big space battles we saw that decade. It won me over with the dialogue and the patience it demands, but I kept thinking whether a higher spot is earned by pace and scope or by ideas.

Maybe the real issue is not the placement but what you want from a sci fi movie. Could the problem be you are chasing a thrill ride when you actually want a puzzle?

I remember a scene that lingered long after the credits and I keep thinking about what that feeling means for a ranking I pushed the list around in my head for a day and still did not settle
