Should I accept a fully funded PhD offer with the uncertain academic job market?

I’m finishing my master’s in molecular biology and I’ve been offered a fully-funded PhD position in a great lab, but I’m genuinely worried about the long-term academic job market. The idea of spending five more years on a project that might only lead to a string of unstable postdocs is making me hesitate to sign the contract.

I get the jitters. I was in a similar spot after my master's, and five more years on a project that might not pay off kept me up. The academic job market feels unpredictable, even in a top lab.

Some folks I know rode the postdoc wave for quite a while and never settled into a tenure track. Not everyone, but it happened enough to make me cautious.

What helped a bit was talking to alumni and checking where their students landed, not just the number of papers. It didn't erase the fear, but it opened up other paths and made me less sure the PhD was the only route.

Is the real issue the market itself, or are you after a certain label of success that a long PhD might not deliver?
