Should I balance motion blur and sharpness in street photography?
#1
I’ve been trying to get a better handle on the relationship between shutter speed and motion blur in my street photography. I keep ending up with shots where the subject is either frustratingly soft or frozen in a way that feels completely lifeless, and I can’t seem to find that sweet spot for a bit of intentional blur that still reads as sharp where it counts.

I finally found a range that feels usable for street subjects moving at human pace: about 1/60 to 1/125. If you want a little motion in the background, you can dip to 1/30, but keep your main subject readable by focusing on the eyes and bracing yourself.

I used to shoot at 1/250 thinking I needed to freeze everything and it felt stiff. Dropping to 1/60 and letting some movement in the frame happen actually woke the shots up, even when the subject wasn’t moving fast.

Make sure your autofocus isn’t hunting. I started using a single focus point on the eyes and then panning when the subject moved; the face stayed roughly sharp while the limbs blurred with the motion. Not perfect, but better.

I’ve also caught myself chasing perfect sharpness in crowded scenes and forgetting to consider light. In shade I bumped ISO a bit and opened up, which changed the edge contrast and made the blur read differently. It wasn’t a magic trick, just a tweak I paid attention to.

I did a quick test: shoot a burst at 1/60 from a moving train platform, then another burst at 1/125 from the sidewalk. The 1/60 set showed more life and the 1/125 set felt more documentary but less lively. The results varied by subject.

Do you think the problem is that you expect every shot to be sharp, or is the blur you want actually part of the story?
