Should i board a full bus or wait for the next one?

I’m trying to figure out the etiquette for when you’re waiting at a bus stop and the bus is clearly full. I saw it approaching yesterday, people were packed in, and I just stepped back and waved the driver on, but then I wondered if I should have still tried to board and squeeze in.

In my neighborhood I just step back and wave them on when the bus is obviously full. It feels like giving space to the people who really need it and avoiding a stampede at the doors.

I did try to squeeze in once, and the doors closed on me. It was loud and awkward, and I ended up waiting for the next bus anyway. After that I don’t push it.

Sometimes I wonder if the real issue is the schedule. If the next bus isn’t far behind, the etiquette might be simple: don’t fight the crowd, wait for the next. If it’s a long gap, people get cranky.

There was a time a driver paused to check a stroller or someone with a cane before closing doors. It felt human, but I’m not sure if that’s policy or just luck. Either way, I tend to concede and wait rather than press my way in.
