Should I build a custom Shopify-WMS integration for fulfillment?

As we move further into the decade, I'm curious how podcast culture and trends are shifting. What changes are you noticing in how people create, distribute, and discuss podcasts? Are there emerging formats, changing listener expectations, or new ways podcasts are integrating into daily life? Let's discuss the broader podcast culture and trends beyond just specific show recommendations.

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the effort to build a custom integration between my Shopify store and our legacy warehouse management system. The built-in apps don’t quite handle our specific picking and packing workflow, but I’m worried about the ongoing maintenance and potential downtime. Has anyone gone through a similar custom development project for their fulfillment process?

Yep, we built a bridge between Shopify and our legacy warehouse system last year. It started as a small proof of concept and grew into a real integration with order exports, pack slips, and status updates. We kept a staging environment, a simple rollback plan, and an on call person who handled outages. It helped with picking accuracy and visibility, but ongoing maintenance still felt steady rather than glamorous.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem isn’t how we design the process rather than the tech. We spent months on data models and timing, only to see bottlenecks in the picking queue. A cleaner process first, then add tech as a fallback might have saved a lot of hair pulling.

We did a custom build, but API changes in the old system forced hotfixes every couple weeks. It was exhausting. We pivoted to a managed integration layer and pared the custom logic down to essentials.

Honestly, we’re still in flight. The plan looked solid, but downtime during releases surprised us. We added feature flags and a longer deploy window, but I still dread the next rollback.

I started by tallying orders per hour and mapping fields, then got stuck chasing edge cases. Way later I realized half the issues were naming mismatches in the data. Fixed once, then forgot why we worried.

Have you tested a staged cutover with a dark period, or are you counting on a seamless migration?
