Should i buy the ps4 version for a free ps5 upgrade?

I just got a PS5 and I'm trying to decide which version of a game to buy when there's both a PS4 and a PS5 release. The PS4 one is way cheaper used, but I'm worried the upgrade path might not be straightforward or I'll miss out on some DualSense features. Has anyone actually tried buying the last-gen version and using the free next-gen upgrade?

I bought the PS4 version on sale and used the free upgrade; after the patch it ran fine on PS5 and I got the DualSense effects in practice.

I tried the cheap path and it worked, but I kept worrying I’d miss something the PS5 version would have and I couldn’t tell if all the enhancements were truly there until later.

In the end I skipped the upgrade gamble and bought the PS5 version outright, because the wait and extra download felt like more trouble than it was worth.
