Should I buy the PS5 version or PS4 with upgrade for next-gen features?

I just got a PS5 and I'm trying to decide which version of a game to buy when there's both a PS4 and a PS5 release. The PS4 one is often cheaper, but I'm worried I'll miss out on the proper next-gen features like faster loading and the DualSense haptics if I just get the last-gen edition and use the free upgrade. Has anyone else been in this spot?

Yeah I went through this. I bought the newer version when it released and the fast loading was obvious in the first couple of quick starts. The DualSense stuff felt nice in a few scenes, but honestly it wasn't a game changer in most titles. I did have to hunt for a patch on one game, which felt silly but it showed up after a day.

I saved money by the upgrade route and kept a careful eye on load times; in some games it was smooth, in others I barely noticed the difference.

One title behaved differently, I think because the upgrade patch wasn't linked to the old version correctly; I sat in a menu waiting for it to show up and mumbled under my breath.

I found myself chasing features that mattered, like faster level loads, but some games lock certain haptics behind performance modes that don't feel worth it.

I started to wonder if the real issue is whether I care about the upgrade enough to justify the extra space and the patching drama.

Have you tried comparing a couple of saves across both versions to see if you’re really missing something or if it's mostly cosmetic?
