Should I choose a corporate pilot career over a major airline?

I’m trying to decide between a career as a corporate pilot or flying for a major airline. The corporate schedule seems more predictable, but I keep hearing the long-term earning potential and benefits at a legacy carrier are unmatched. I’m just not sure if giving up that kind of lifestyle control is worth it.

I did corporate flying for a couple of years. The schedule looked predictable on paper, but client calls, last minute routing changes, and maintenance holdovers made it anything but steady. I spent more time in hotels and airports than at home, and the pay growth felt capped after a while. I ultimately moved on.

A buddy went to a legacy carrier. The pension style benefits, 401k matching, and a clear upgrade path can be compelling. But you chase long days, holidays, and the schedule can swing. If retirement planning and travel perks matter, it’s tempting, even if the pace isn’t perfect.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the job title but what you want your days to look like. One week you’re home every night, the next you’re sitting in a hotel over a three day layover. The industry changes a lot, and sometimes the grass isn’t greener on either side.

I’m not sure I can give a clean answer. The numbers and benefits shift by region and company, and I’ve seen both tracks burn people out. My own plan changed when family stuff came up, so I chased whatever kept me sane. What part of this decision matters most to you right now?
