Should I choose a Thunderbolt dock or USB-C hub for my laptop?

I’m trying to decide between a Thunderbolt dock and a standard USB-C hub for my new laptop, but I’m not sure if the extra cost is justified. My main use is connecting two 1080p monitors, an external SSD, and occasionally an Ethernet cable, but I don’t work with video or massive file transfers.

I started with a USB-C hub for two 1080p monitors and an external SSD. It worked, but I ran into occasional flicker on the second monitor when the SSD was active, and some hubs didn't even charge the laptop.

The idea of a Thunderbolt dock sounds nice for a clean one cable setup and proper charging, but the price and compatibility worries kept me from pulling the trigger.

I tried a USB-C hub and it did the job, but I had to juggle cables and sometimes swap HDMI adapters to keep both screens awake.

I learned that some laptops limit how many displays you can drive from USB-C, so the extra port on the dock isn't always fully used.

I did a quick test and found that even a solid USB-C hub could handle two 1080p displays and an SSD, but if I started copying big files and streaming video at the same time the display action got a touch jittery.

I bought a TB dock but returned it after a couple of firmware updates and quirks; it felt like overkill for my setup.

Do you actually need Ethernet every day, or is wifi good enough most of the time?
