Should i choose automatic vs dual-clutch transmission for daily driving?

I’m trying to decide between a traditional automatic and a dual-clutch transmission for my next daily driver. I’ve only ever owned regular automatics, but I keep hearing about the faster shifts and efficiency of a DCT, though some say they can be jerky in traffic.

I swapped from a traditional auto to a dual-clutch in my daily and the shifts felt instant, especially when you flick it into sport. On the highway it’s slick, revs hang just right. In real stop-and-go city traffic it can feel a little jumpy, like the clutch can’t decide what to do. Maintenance has been a tad pricier than the auto I had before.

I kept an automatic for my daily and it’s super forgiving. It never surprises you in traffic, shifts are smooth, pedal effort is light, and it just fades into the background. The trade-off is a bit more lag when you want instant snappy passes, which a sportier setup would handle differently.

I did a side by side test by renting two cars for a weekend — one auto, one with a dual-clutch. The faster shifts were noticeable, and in a short 20-minute loop I measured about a quarter-second quicker upshifts on the DCT, but creeping in traffic still felt twitchy. It did make me worry a bit about clutch wear if I did tons of stop-and-go.

Do you mostly drive in stop-and-go city or on open highways?
