Should i dm someone from a group chat to move it to a private chat?

I’ve been talking to someone in a group chat for months and we really click, but I’m worried about sliding into their DMs to try and make it a one-on-one friendship. It feels like moving from a public space to a private one might change the dynamic or seem too forward, and I don’t want to make things awkward for the whole group.

I get the worry. I waited too long in a group chat and then finally DM'd the person to chat one on one. The vibe in the group felt almost the same, but I kept hoping it wouldn't tilt into private territory or feel like an escalation. They responded warmly but took a day, and we talked about a shared hobby instead of personal stuff. It felt doable, not dramatic, but I still kept it light and not pushy. The next weeks the group chat stayed active and we slid into more solo calls, but I can't say it felt perfect.

Maybe the problem isn't moving to a private chat but what you expect from it. If you're hoping for a best friend overnight, that's a lot in one leap. The group space gives you a version of them, not the full person. A low key test could be a short, casual message about a topic you both care about and see how they respond.

I tried it once and it was fine, really. I sent a simple message about a shared interest and they were receptive, we ended up grabbing coffee later that week. It wasn't life changing, but it did create a separate thread of conversation. Some days I overthink it, others I just forget about the group.

On a different note, remember that time the group almost switched venues for a meetup and we spent hours arguing about coffee vs tea? The vibe went off topic before we circled back. Anyway, moving private might change the energy, or not, and it's impossible to know until you try.
