Should I do a PhD or start a career as an industry research scientist?

I’m finishing my undergrad in molecular biology and I’m trying to decide if I should pursue a PhD or go straight into an industry research scientist role. The thought of five more years of grad school on a stipend is daunting, but I also worry that skipping the doctorate will permanently limit my project leadership potential.

I ended up going for a PhD and it did teach me how to stay with a problem for years, which helps with long projects. The leadership I gained came more from getting small wins on projects, mentoring people, and dealing with timelines than from the degree itself. The grant culture and the pressure to publish were real drains, and I wished I had more chances to manage budgets and cross functional teams.

I skipped the doctorate and went straight into industry research. I learned to own a project, present data clearly, and push for autonomous decision making. It moved faster, but I sometimes felt the door was narrower when promotions rolled around; still, I built leadership by taking on stretch assignments.

A friend did a doctorate then went into biotech, loved the deep dive but struggled with grant cycles and job shifts. They did land a leadership role eventually, but it took longer and they had to hustle for juicy projects. I keep thinking it's about mentors and opportunities more than the letters.

I keep wondering if the issue is really the choice between a degree or industry role, or whether you just want a certain pace and autonomy. I've seen both paths lead to solid leadership tracks, and I've seen people switch midstream once they prove themselves on a tough project.
