Should I donate to famine relief despite concerns about overhead?

I’m struggling with the decision to donate to a major international relief fund for the current famine. I hear about the massive scale of the crisis and the urgent need, but I also read reports about how little of the money can actually reach the people in the most remote, conflict-affected areas due to access issues and local corruption. I want to help, but I’m worried my contribution will just get swallowed up by logistics and overhead instead of buying food. Has anyone else grappled with this?

I made a donation last year and followed the NGO's field updates. The numbers weren't perfect, but I saw photos of trucks rolling into a town and meals being handed out. It felt real, not just fundraising chatter. The overhead talk still stings, but seeing the direct impact helped me sleep a little easier.

I wrestle with the corruption worry too. I asked for independent audits and public donor reports; they exist, but I can't verify every detail. Still, the partners on the ground told me the money buys food and fuel for logistics, not just paperwork, though you hear horror stories.

Maybe the bigger problem isn't the money but access and insecurity. I tried to support cash transfers to families in a warzone once; the distribution was slow, and some funds ended up paying for security escorts. It was messy.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a better path than giving to a big fund—like supporting local groups who work in a specific area, or volunteering time. But then you worry about scale and stability of those efforts. The dilemma feels endless.
