Should I get a Class B license for local delivery and insurance?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth the hassle to get my Class B license for a local delivery route I’m considering. The pay bump is decent, but I keep hearing mixed things about the insurance costs and whether finding a decent used straight truck is even realistic right now.

I looked at getting the Class B license last year for a local delivery route. The pay bump was real, but the insurance costs for a straight truck were higher than I expected. Quotes were stiff and the terms felt tight for a new driver. It made the math feel rough.

I spent a weekend hunting for a used straight truck. Listings looked hit or miss and a lot of them needed work right away. I talked to three dealers and two private sellers. Financing was rarely friendly and the cash price was high in many cases.

A coworker tried a similar move. He ran the route for a month and tracked the numbers day by day. After fuel and maintenance the margin looked thinner than he expected and he quit early.

Maybe the real snag is not the license or the truck but finding steady customers and good route timing. Do you have a way to gauge real daily demand before you commit?
