Should I get my headlights aligned if they seem aimed too low?

I’ve noticed my car’s headlights seem to be aimed too low on my regular night commute, especially on unlit back roads. I’m not sure if this is just how they’re supposed to be or if the alignment is off, but it feels like I’m not seeing far enough ahead to react safely at speed.

I had this exact thing last winter. A pothole jolt nudged the headlights a bit low. A quick shop visit fixed the aim and suddenly the light patch stretched farther down the road, which made a real difference.

On unlit back roads it felt like the beam was skimming the surface and I wasn’t seeing far enough ahead. I started focusing more on the road edge and speed, but it still kept nagging at me until I could test it on a brighter stretch.

Do you know if your car has adjustable beam height and if there’s a safe driveway check you can do before a pro look?
