Should I get winter tires for my front-wheel sedan or stick with all-seasons?

I’m trying to decide if I should get a set of winter tires for my front-wheel-drive sedan this year, or just keep using my all-seasons. My commute has a few hills that get icy, and last year I definitely felt the all-seasons struggling for grip a couple times.

I switched to winter tires last year on my front wheel drive sedan and it made a noticeable difference on icy hills. The car felt more planted and I could stop a bit sooner without sliding. Still drove with caution but it helped.

Are we sure the problem is tires and not the way I was approaching hills or my route? I keep thinking upgrading would fix it but maybe changing the driving technique matters more.

Before winter tires I ran all seasons and finally tried a set of non studded winters. They were better in snow and freezing rain but the cost and the noise were bigger than I expected. I kept them only for the season when ice was forecast.

I ended up leaving all seasons on but I added a small bag of sand for traction and I lowered the tire pressure a bit on cold mornings. It helped me crawl uphill a bit though not a perfect fix.
