Should I go with 1440p or 4K for gaming performance?

I'm trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I'm worried my graphics card might struggle with the higher resolution in newer games. The clarity is tempting, but I don't know if the performance hit is worth it for the screen size I'm looking at.

I tried 4K with a midrange GPU and it was rough. Even after dialing back settings, frame times spiked in newer titles. I stuck with 1440p on a 27 inch after that; the smoothness mattered more than the extra pixels.

At 1440p I found a practical sweet spot. Lowered a couple of things like shadows and some post effects, left others higher, and still got good visuals. The jump in perceived clarity is nice, but the feel of the game matters more.

I've looked at upscaling as a compromise. Native 4K looks great, but you can often land close to 4K clarity with DLSS or FSR and keep the frame rate higher.

Maybe the bottleneck isn't the pixels. Could be driver quirks, CPU limits, or just how you sit in front of the screen. I keep flipping between setups and nothing feels settled. Do you sit close enough to notice the extra pixels?
