Should I go with a quiet membrane keyboard or a tactile mechanical one?

I’ve been trying to decide between a mechanical and a membrane keyboard for my home office setup, but I’m worried the noise from the mechanical switches will drive my partner crazy during late-night work sessions. I love the tactile feel, yet I keep wondering if a good quiet membrane board could give me a similar typing speed without the clatter.

Trying both surprised me. I went with a dampened, tactile mechanical switch and a heavier case, and the room finally quieted down at night. The noise dropped enough that my partner didn’t complain, though there was still a soft bump every time I bottomed out. The typing speed didn’t suddenly shoot up, but I found my rhythm faster once I got used to the feel.

I actually bought a membrane board after that because I craved silence more than the feel. It was quiet, but the feedback felt mushy and I slowed down a bit while adapting, so my rough speed stayed similar in practice. I kept reaching for the wrong keys sometimes.

Would you try a low-profile membrane with small tactile bumps or a damped mechanical with silicone rings?

One afternoon I got distracted by the chair squeak and the monitor stand buzzing, and it felt like the whole desk got louder than the keyboard. I drifted off into thinking about isolation and the rugs, then came back to the keyboard question but still not sure if the problem is the noise or the habit of how I type late at night.
