Should I hire a van or partner with a courier for last-mile food box delivery?

With so many ai developments happening constantly, it's hard to know which ones really matter. I try to filter through the noise to identify ai developments that have genuine potential.

Some of the latest ai developments I'm tracking involve more efficient training methods and better interpretability tools. What ai developments are you paying attention to? Any ai developments you think are being overlooked?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle the last-mile delivery for my small but growing local food box scheme. My current courier is getting unreliable, but I’m not sure if I should invest in my own van and driver or try to find a more specialized partner for this final leg.

We tried bringing the driver in-house for a while. It seemed simple on paper, but licenses, insurance, vehicle maintenance, and hours changed a lot of the math.

We started talking with a specialized last-mile partner that handles food and cold boxes. They sounded great until we checked their real capacity and got hit with cold-chain penalties.

One guy I know in a similar setup did a hybrid: kept a couple of vans for peak days and used a partner otherwise. It was okay on weeks with big orders.

Do you actually need same-day delivery, or are a few hour windows enough?

Our metrics dropped when we switched providers; on-time dropped to 85% in a month, so we pulled back and renegotiated.

I keep thinking the problem is more the route planning and communication than the carrier. We tried a basic GPS tracker and it helped a bit.
