Hey, I've been working on my freelance design portfolio and I'm stuck—should I include smaller passion projects that are more experimental if they don't relate to the type of paid client work I want to get?

yeah I tried adding a few small experiments to my portfolio. they showed how I think through problems more than the final look. some clients asked about them and others were unsure what they meant for real work. I kept the paid client work visible and tucked the experiments behind a separate page.

for me the signals mattered. I kept the real client projects as the main case studies and put the experiments in a room that describe my process. it helped show range without muddying the message you want to send about reliability and outcome.

are you sure the problem is the portfolio or is it the outreach?

i drifted last week into a tangent about how I present thumbnails and captions. the little details mattered more than the work on some days. still I came back to the idea that a clean contrast between paid work and experiments can help people see your range without guessing your taste for real projects.
