Should I install a fixed VHF radio or keep handheld for longer coastal trips?

I’m trying to decide if I should install a new VHF radio on my 24-foot center console or just rely on my handheld unit. The handheld has been fine for inshore stuff, but I’m starting to do longer runs along the coast and I’m wondering if the fixed mount’s better antenna and power is worth the cost and installation hassle.

I swapped to a fixed mount VHF radio a couple seasons ago when I started doing longer coastal runs. The difference was real: better range with the higher antenna, clearer audio, and I could transmit while the boat was rolling. The install was a weekend project plus some wiring, and not cheap, but the reliability is worth it once you’re offshore. If you don’t go far enough to need it, you can skip, but the convenience adds up.

I keep the handheld as my daily driver and a backup. On inshore days it’s fine, and the battery life is solid. The fixed install sounds nice in theory, but the cost, hole in the deck, and potential interference from the electronics on a 24 footer give me pause for now.

I did a rough range check with a handheld and a fixed-mounted setup. In clear weather I could hear better and talk farther with the fixed rig, but as soon as spray and rough seas hit, the handheld kept me usable when the fixed antenna got shielded. It’s not magic; line of sight and antenna height still win.

I’m starting to wonder if the real issue isn’t the radio at all but how often I actually need to call weather, share a safe position, or call for help in a pinch. Do you actually need the DSC feature or is the main goal simply clearer audio?
