Should i install a vhf ais radio for foggy coastal cruising safety?

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth installing a new VHF radio with AIS receive on my 24-foot coastal cruiser. I mostly do day trips in familiar waters, but I’ve had a couple of close calls with fast-moving commercial traffic in the fog where seeing their name and course would have been a huge relief.

I added a VHF AIS receive last season to my 24' coastal cruiser. In fog it felt like a second set of eyes—targets show up on the plotter with their name or call sign, their speed, and a rough course. It actually changed how I threaded through traffic on a couple of trips and kept me calmer.

I’m not sure the problem is only visibility; even with the gear you still need to decide what to do if a fast boat won’t give you room. It helps, but it won’t replace judgment.

We talked about it for a while and then I held off. The upfront cost, the extra antenna, and the power draw felt like more than I was ready to spend for a coastal 24 footer. I did a quick demo on a friend's boat and saw some benefit, but not a slam dunk.

A friend lent me a handheld receiver for a weekend. It picked up a few commercial targets and I watched the projected tracks, which made me more confident near busy traffic. I’m still torn about whether to install a fixed unit in the cabin.
