Should i keep climate controls when upgrading wireless android auto head unit?

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth upgrading my car’s factory head unit for wireless Android Auto, but I’m worried about losing the integrated climate controls and steering wheel buttons. Has anyone made this switch and gotten all the original functions to work properly with an aftermarket unit?

I did a head unit swap last year in a mid 2010s sedan. Wireless Android Auto worked fine, and with a CAN bus adapter the steering wheel controls mostly mapped to the new unit. The climate controls stayed in the dash and I could still adjust temp and fan with the stock panel. It wasn’t perfect—occasionally the wheel buttons misfired after a long drive— but it felt usable.

I tried going aftermarket and ended up keeping the OEM because the climate panel went dead when the new head unit took over the CAN network. The wheel buttons needed extra adapters to map right, and I never got a clean setup. I returned it and stayed with the stock, which was reliable but boring.

From what I learned on boards, the real pitfall is matching the CAN/BUS interface to your car’s firmware. If you pick a generic adapter, you can lose climate or wheel control and chase a fix forever.

One day I wandered into dash kit and module upgrade rabbit holes and kept wondering if the extra features were worth trading the basic HVAC buttons. If you already rely on HVAC buttons, it’s a tradeoff I still question. Do you actually use the climate controls a lot, or would you trade them for a bigger screen and wireless Android Auto?
