Should I keep Steam games or move to GOG for DRM-free ownership?
#1
I’ve been trying to decide between keeping my games on Steam or moving my whole library over to GOG. I like having everything in one place, but I really value the idea of true ownership and having DRM-free installers. Has anyone else made this switch and regretted it later because of missing features or community tools?

I moved a good chunk of my games to GOG last year to get true ownership and DRM-free installers. It’s really nice to have a backup installer you can run offline and a patch stream you control. The flip side is missing Steam cloud saves and the overlay for quick invites. I still keep Steam for most of my library, especially social features and automatic updates, but I’ve learned to tolerate manual patches for a few titles on GOG.

Not a full regret, but there are frictions. A handful of games wouldn’t show up in Galaxy right away after I bought them on GOG, so I had to re-add them or launch with workarounds. The modding community feels thinner without Steam Workshop links, which means hunting patches or mods on Nexus or the dev pages more often.

Sometimes I wonder if the real issue isn’t DRM at all but library management. I started keeping a tiny spreadsheet of what’s on each platform, what needs updates, and where saves live. It feels like extra busywork, and it makes me less spontaneous about trying new things. But maybe that’s life with a shuffled library.

Do you actually use Steam features a lot, or are you mostly after owning the game?
