Should I mix color illustrations with my monochrome portfolio?
#1
I’ve been trying to build a more cohesive portfolio, but I keep getting stuck on whether to include my full-color character illustrations alongside my black and white ink work. The tonal value range in my monochrome pieces feels so complete on its own, but I worry the color work distracts from that strength.

I experimented by keeping color and monochrome in separate sections of the same portfolio. The color pages drew the eye first which made the black and white pieces feel sharper after I kept them in a distinct labelable block.

Color work sits nicely in its own gallery and the ink pieces breathe when the color pages are tucked to a side.

I did a quick screen grab of the PDF and timed how long people spent on each page. The color pages averaged longer, like a detour.

Maybe the real problem isn't the color at all but how the pieces are sequenced or titled.

I tried a tiny experiment with two color pieces near the start and two monochrome after and then cut the color chunk after a week because it felt off.

Sometimes the tonal range of the ink pieces feels done and adding color seems like it expects a different mood or client. Do you find color pieces change how you read the linework on your page layout?

I drifted into talking about paper weight and how it changes how the ink reads then remembered the goal was consistency but the answer still eludes me.
